πβ¨ THE FORGOTTEN MAGIC OF ORDINARY THINGS
Part 1: The Shoes Hidden in the Walls
What if I told you that, for centuries, people deliberately hid old shoes inside the walls of their homes?
Not pairs. Often just one lonely, well-worn shoe.
They tucked them beneath floorboards, behind fireplaces, and inside chimneys.
Why?
Some believed that a shoe, having taken the shape of its ownerβs foot, retained something of that personβs presence. Perhaps it could guard the house against unwelcome spirits.
Others associated shoes with luck, fertility, and protection.
Which brings me back to a favorite childhood rhyme about a little old woman who lived in a shoe.
Was her enormous shoe a symbol of fertility? A joke about an overcrowded home? Or simply a wonderfully absurd image?
Nobody knows for certain.
But I rather like imagining that somewhere, in a little house shaped like an old boot, a wonderfully eccentric woman is still keeping her own kind of magic alive.
π Have you ever discovered something mysterious inside an old house?
